Uniqueworks – An Ending And A Beginning

Dear Everyone,

It seems a long time ago since we stood outside our first little shop in Pembroke Main Street in 2009.

 

We’ve been making Uniqueworks handmade furniture for thirteen years now and it seems to have been all we’ve lived and breathed throughout that time. Unbelievable to give it all up – but we have decided to do just that and to follow a new opportunity in Herefordshire, where Jake has been offered a really interesting job, at the very wonderful Whitney Sawmills.  

There’ll be more news to follow, but for now, thank you to everyone who’s supported us, everyone who we’ve met, collaborated with and befriended along the way.

Our very best wishes and here’s to a new adventure,

It’s a funky modern shelf unit – solid oak and dark stain. Bit of a technical challenger this one, but very satisfying to get it all finished and proper.

Friday & Saturday 10th – 11th December 10-4pm

We are a small creative company, making handmade furniture in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.

 

We specialise in beautifully made, one-off and bespoke pieces, eye-catching and finished to a high standard of craftsmanship, using sustainable Welsh and British wood. We work in both contemporary and classic styles, or can create one of your own designs.

We have been busy at the workshop and there’s lots of new work for us to show you. Here’s our online gallery of all the Uniqueworks furniture that’s currently available to purchase. Our furniture is on display upstairs at our harbour-side workshop in Pembroke Dock, West Wales. You are most welcome to visit and browse – just take the normal COVID precautions. Uniqueworks Team Up With Annwn Restaurant in Pembrokeshire

Over the last few months we‘ve had the singular privilege of working with renowned chef Matt Powell, to make furniture for his innovative new Annwn Restaurant at Lawrenny. We’ve used beautiful native oak burr wood to create four bespoke dining tables, which complement Matt’s deep love and use of natural and local Welsh produce. Annwn opened last week, amidst great acclaim and affection.

Matt is a remarkable chef with over 20 years experience and has worked for Raymond Blanc and in Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe. Inspired by his rural Pembrokeshire surroundings and by memories of his own Welsh upbringing and cultural heritage, Matt uses only locally found and Welsh ingredients to offer a truly unique foraging and fine dining experience, with a genuine sense of place.

To mirror this love for nature, we have sourced fantastic, gorgeously grainy oak burr wood from the Welsh borders and created all the new dining tables for the restaurant, including the seriously handsome ‘Chef’s Table’, located close to the open-view kitchen, where guests can sit, anticipate and soak up the atmosphere, as Matt creates his dishes.

Each of the tables is of a different design and has been individually crafted by Jake at our workshop in Pembrokeshire.

The Lion’s Face Table

This is our beautiful, hand-crafted coffee table, created from British burr oak wood. The table is solid and heavy and the colour and grain of the oak wood is really eye-catching – this would make a stunning centre-piece.

 

 

The grain of the oak is superb and covered with natural burry patterns. If you look into the markings, the impression of a lion’s face jumps out at you, complete with eyes and nose! The tawny light brown colour of the wood is perfect for the illusion. Take a look yourself and see what you think. It’s why we called this piece The Lion’s Face Table!

 

                                              

The top of the coffee table has been crafted from two adjoining boards from the same tree, which have been carefully chosen and book-matched to create a handsome mirrored effect.

As with all our furniture pieces, the whole surface of the coffee table has been repeatedly finished and polished by hand, to produce a smoothed and tactile feel – it is a joy to run your hand over it and to touch the grain.

 

    

We craft our furniture using both traditional and modern techniques, to the highest standards. We trust our pieces will last for decades to come and hopefully become family heirlooms of the future.

It’s quite unusual to find burr oak of this quality – it’s rather special.  As furniture makers, we feel we are entrusted to do justice to our native trees, when they have to be felled or pruned. We aim to give the tree a second chance to hopefully last and be appreciated for many more years yet.

 

                     

The Lion’s Face Table has been crafted by our qualified Uniqueworks cabinet-maker, as a one off and unique item, at our small workshop in Pembrokeshire. Everything we make is an individual piece, inspired by the wood itself. Please contact us if you would like us to make you an item of furniture, unique to your specifications. We have been crafting furniture at Uniqueworks for twelve years and have many customer Testimonials available, if you would like to see them.

Each piece of Uniqueworks furniture is signed individually by our furniture-maker and comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity.
