Created with a certain classic styling, this is a practical and beautiful drop-leaf table, made from marvellously rare and patterned Welsh lacewood, which is also known as the wood of the London Plane Tree – grown commonly in London, but only seen as an unusual ornamental tree here in West Wales.
Otherwise called a gate-legged or Pembroke table, this style of extendable table is particularly versatile and can be opened or closed on hinges, to become a full-sized dining table, a square table for four, or a slim console table. If you have surprise extra guests, simply open up the table et voila, dinner for six.
Because of the quirky character of this spalted wood, the table almost has a ‘vintage’ feel about it and there is an almost imperceptible wave in the wood, which gives it additional character and has become a pleasing feature of this one-off piece.
