May’s Featured Furniture – A Table With A Hole
On May 12, 2015 Comments Off on May’s Featured Furniture – A Table With A HoleWe’ve decided to start a new feature for Uniqueworks and select one piece from our furniture collection each month to highlight and tell you about. It may be the latest piece of furniture to come from Jake’s workbench, it may be made from some special wood, or there may be an interesting story to tell about its journey from tree to table!
This month we have chosen Jake’s current project, which we have called ‘A Table With A Hole’.
We love to use British and particularly, as we live and work in Wales, Welsh natively grown hardwoods for our work – and this little oak table is no exception. Many furniture-makers and pretty much all big manufacturers look for uniformity and regularity in their timber, but we do like to try and capture the real essence and character of the trees themselves and so we often deliberately choose wood with plenty of knots, burrs and grain – we actually value the ‘imperfections’ for adding to the personality of the work!
This coffee table uses our favourite dark ‘cat’s paw’ oak and is densely covered in natural burry patterns. Where a knot of the wood has fallen out, we have simply incorporated….the hole! You might either love it….or hate it, for going against the rules of good craftsmanship. But we rather like it as a bit of a quirk and hope you will forgive us for a little bit of furniture anarchy.
