Welcome to Uniqueworks… How it Began!

Thank you for joining us for our first Uniqueworks Blog and we hope you’ll enjoy and tune into our woody ramblings.

Uniqueworks is Jake Humphries, our furniture-maker / designer and all-round woodsman, plus Stephanie Smith, resident photographer and jack-of-all-trades for the company. We founded the business in 2009 after Jake had completed a three year Furniture Production course at Cardigan College, gaining distinctions and the accolade of ‘star pupil’. His burning desire to start his own furniture-making company qwelled any sensible advice to go and work for somebody else first, and we threw ourselves into setting up a Pembrokeshire workshop with our very own high street shop in Pembroke.

It was a fantastic two and a half years where we embarked on a steep learning curve, meshed into the local community, made great furniture and became a showcase gallery for all manner of local craftspeople, photographers and artists. We also began to realise how many ‘woodaphiles’ – people who really like wood – there are about the place! Our ethos was that everything we sold had to be made by hand, not mass-manufactured. And it had to be beautiful. In 2011 we decided to move out and create a new bigger showroom shop, housing everything under one roof at our Pembroke Dock workshops. This is where you can still find us at The Maritime Park, overlooking the Haven Estuary, where in quiet moments, we can watch the ferry from Ireland coming into dock and gaze at brilliant Pembrokeshire west coast sunsets as they light up the water. Here we make and sell all Jake’s trademark handmade furniture, whether for display in the shop or for bespoke commissions for our customers. Our furniture has been sent all over the UK.

We welcome everyone to visit us, meet the craftsman, talk wood and walk away with a beautiful piece of furniture for their homes, which will last a lifetime… or two.

Thank you Lou for your kind words. Writing the Blog brought back some great memories, but change is good too. Your shop is a little gem – creative, intelligent, good-looking product (and staff !), cool vibe and some of the best tasting coffee I’ve ever had – what more could you ask for ?
